Looking for tips on how to potty train your dog? We have the answers! According to the American Kennel Club (AKC), there are three tried-and-true methods for training any dog. These include: crate training, frequent trips outdoors, and paper training. Depending on your daily schedule, one of these methods is sure to fit your lifestyle.

  1. Crate Training
    • The reasoning behind crate training is dogs are “den animals” and the crate provides a sense of safety. Dogs also like clean living spaces; they will learn to not go to the bathroom where they sleep.
    • Make sure the crate is the perfect size – it should be just large enough for the dog to lie down, stand up, and turn around.
    • When your dog feels the urge to go to the bathroom, they should let you know by whining and scratching. Don’t delay in taking them outside!
  2. Frequent Trips Outdoors
    • Making a schedule is vital to house training.
    • The American Kennel Club says “a good guide is that dogs can control their bladders for the number of hours corresponding to their age in months up to about nine months to a year.”
    • It’s best to take puppies outside:
      • First thing in the morning/last thing at night
      • After spending time in the crate
      • After eating/drinking
  3. Paper Training
    • Best for those who can’t get home several times a day or those with tiny dogs living where it’s difficult to get outside space/the winters are bad.
    • Puppy pads let your dog know they have the option of going to the bathroom in an approved spot indoors.
    • Once the puppy gets older, owners can gradually work on training them to go outside all the time.
