Protect your pet from fleas and ticks

Protect your furry friends from disruptive fleas and ticks by using preventive flea and tick treatment, such as FRONTLINE or K9 Advantix. While you may not be able to see these pesky creatures, that doesn’t mean they’re not harmful to your pet. Here are some facts about fleas and ticks so you can better protect your animal.

  • Fleas and ticks have hiding places both inside and outside, commonly without your knowledge. Some of their favorite hiding spots are on other pets/animals, around shrubbery and bushes, and in carpets, floors, and sofas in your home.
  • Fleas can multiply in a flash. They can produce around 567 eggs in just 21 days.
  • Flea bites can cause a number of diseases, such as Flee Allergy Dermatitis (FAD), anemia, tapeworm, and Rickettsiosis. These diseases can lead to loss of energy, skin problems, or adversely affect your pet’s health.
  • There are four different types of ticks: lone star tick, American dog tick, deer tick, and brown dog tick. It may be beneficial to learn how these different ticks can affect your pet.
  • Other ways to protect your pet:
    • Wash your pet’s bed cover in hot water periodically. Make sure to dry it on the high heat setting.
    • Make your yard less appealing to ticks by cutting the grass short and eliminating brush piles.
    • Vacuum the inside of your house frequently.
    • Cover up all outside crawl spaces and garbage cans.

Choose wisely when it comes to pet toys

12/13/2017

Toys are essential to the well-being of your pet. Toys are useful for a variety of reasons: they can help fight boredom when you’re away at work, they can provide comfort when your pet is nervous, and they can prevent your pet from developing certain behavioral problems, such as chewing on furniture and nipping house guests. While cats can be picky when it comes to choosing a toy, dogs are more than willing to play with most objects.

When choosing a safe toy for your pet, make sure to take into consideration their size, activity level, preferences, and the environment where they spend the most time. One of the first things to remember is to buy toys that are appropriate for your animal’s size. Toys that are too small can easily be swallowed or become stuck in your pet’s throat. Also, avoid or alter any toys that aren’t “dog proof” by removing any strings, ribbons, eyes, or other small parts that can be ingested. It’s important to remember that soft toys are not indestructible, but some are sturdier than others.

Here are some recommended toys for your pet:

  • Active toys: hard rubber toys that come in many shapes and sizes and are fun for chewing and carrying around. Example: Nylabone or Kong-like toys
  • Distraction toys: toys that can be filled with treats. Many dogs that eat their food too quickly can benefit from feeder-style toys. Example: Kong filled with treats or peanut butter
  • Comfort toys: soft, stuffed toys aren’t appropriate for all dogs, so choose wisely! Find a toy sturdy enough to withstand a dog’s “attack”

Purina? Iams? Blue Buffalo? Oh my!

Having trouble deciding what pet food is best for your dog/cat? The array of options in the pet food aisle can feel overwhelming when they’re all claiming to be the best on the market for your animal. Follow these tips to make sure you’re choosing something that is healthy, affordable, and animal-approved.

  • Dog Food
    • A good dog food contains a mixture of high-quality meats, vegetables, grains, and fruits.
    • Make sure you’re buying food that corresponds with the stage of your dog’s life – for example, puppies should be fed a puppy formula or an “all life stages” food.
    • Don’t worry about “animal byproducts.” These include organs and entrails, which often contain more nutrients than the muscle meat consumed by humans.
    • Read the label. One of the first things you should look for on a label is the statement “complete and balanced.” Complete and balanced diets must contain the minimum amount of all of the nutrients necessary for dogs, which is also indicated in the “guaranteed analysis.”
  • Cat Food
    • For cats, protein from premium animal sources should be the focus of their diets.
    • When looking for the best cat food, look for food where a source of animal protein is the first ingredient on the list along with animal fats and limited carbohydrates.
    • Never purchase a cat food that is made with corn, wheat, or soy ingredients or one that uses artificial additives like colors, flavors, or preservatives.

Potty training can be as easy as 1-2-3!

11/29/2017

Looking for tips on how to potty train your dog? We have the answers! According to the American Kennel Club (AKC), there are three tried-and-true methods for training any dog. These include: crate training, frequent trips outdoors, and paper training. Depending on your daily schedule, one of these methods is sure to fit your lifestyle.

  1. Crate Training
    • The reasoning behind crate training is dogs are “den animals” and the crate provides a sense of safety. Dogs also like clean living spaces; they will learn to not go to the bathroom where they sleep.
    • Make sure the crate is the perfect size – it should be just large enough for the dog to lie down, stand up, and turn around.
    • When your dog feels the urge to go to the bathroom, they should let you know by whining and scratching. Don’t delay in taking them outside!
  2. Frequent Trips Outdoors
    • Making a schedule is vital to house training.
    • The American Kennel Club says “a good guide is that dogs can control their bladders for the number of hours corresponding to their age in months up to about nine months to a year.”
    • It’s best to take puppies outside:
      • First thing in the morning/last thing at night
      • After spending time in the crate
      • After eating/drinking
  3. Paper Training
    • Best for those who can’t get home several times a day or those with tiny dogs living where it’s difficult to get outside space/the winters are bad.
    • Puppy pads let your dog know they have the option of going to the bathroom in an approved spot indoors.
    • Once the puppy gets older, owners can gradually work on training them to go outside all the time.
